Evidence of deleterious effects of microplastics from aquaculture materials on pediveliger larva settlement and oyster spat growth of Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas

Plastic is currently used in aquaculture as a material for settlement and magnification of oyster spats. weathering fragmentation under natural conditions can lead to the production micro nanoparticles additive leakage, with potential toxic effects on marine life. This study investigates exposure microplastic (MPs) cocktail derived from aged pediveliger larvae (Crassostrea gigas). The was made high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP) polyvinyl chloride (PVC). concentrations tested were 0, 0.1, 10 mg MP·L−1. During 7-day fixation phase, (17 days) exposed MP laboratory-controlled conditions. After exposure, success significantly lower MP·L−1 (49 ± 0.9%) compared control ones (61.8 1.6%). No malformations or metamorphosis abnormalities observed. Growth spat stages monitored up 11 months. first twenty-eight days development, growth two MPs (0.1 MP·L−1; respectively −51.8% −44.4%) group. Subsequently, previously oysters grew faster than condition, resulting greater MP·L−1: +18.3% +19.7%) group at end follow-up. nearly one-year follow-up highlighted C. gigas.
